Library won't recoup money lost to hackers

Jonesboro -

Officials say the $37,500 that was stolen from the Jonesboro Public Library during a computer hacking may have ended up in the Czech Republic.

But the chairman of the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library's Board of Trustees, says the library will not be able to recoup the money it lost.

In September, computer hackers cleared out $37,514 from the library's payroll account. A second attempt to take nearly $40,000 from the same account was stopped.

The Jonesboro Sun reports that the hacker gained access to the library's direct-deposit account, using the names of 6 people to move the money. Library officials say there is no insurance to cover the lost money.

The library will absorb its loss by reducing the system's carryover funds.
