The Arkansas Lottery Commission is putting new limits on pay for its next director after being criticized over the high salary the former director and his deputies received.
The commission on Monday voted to set $175,000 as the maximum salary for its director. The commission plans to begin interviewing candidates to replace Ernie Passailaigue (PASS'-uh-lay), who resigned last year.
Lawmakers and others frequently criticized Passailaigue's $324,000 salary. State law sets the lottery director's maximum pay at $141,603, but the director can be paid 2½ times that amount if the Legislature approves it.
Commissioners said the $175,000 figure would put the director's salary above the highest paid lottery official.
