Little Rock -
Former Little Rock mayor and state representative George Eugene Wimberly has died. He was 92.
Little Rock Funeral Home, which is handling funeral arrangements, says Wimberly died Sunday.
Arkansas Business reports that Wimberly gained notoriety after the 1988 death of his friend, the former Little Rock police Chief Jess "Doc" Hale. Hale had been accused of stealing less than $200 from Wimberly's pharmacy, Buice Drug Store. The former police chief committed suicide a month after he was charged with misdemeanor theft.
Wimberly, a Democrat, was a state representative at the time of Hale's death. He was defeated by independent Jim Lendall in his re-election bid.
Funeral services are pending.
