Ark. nuclear plant to review new seismic model

RUSSELLVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Arkansas' nuclear power plant is going to review a new seismic model released by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to figure out whether the plant needs to make any changes to prepare for earthquakes.

Arkansas Nuclear One spokeswoman Donna Gregory said Wednesday that the Russellville plant isn't anticipating any major changes to the protections it already has in place.

She says the plant was designed and built to withstand the largest earthquake historically reported in the area - plus a margin of safety.

However, Gregory cautioned that it's too early to tell whether the plant will have to make any tweaks based on the new seismic model, which was released Tuesday by the Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
