Residents in the Cove Road area of Pope County are being told to stay inside while state, county and Russellville police search for a man who took off running when the truck he was riding in was pulled over around 1:45 Saturday afternoon.
Pope County Sheriff Aaron Duvall tells KATV a manhunt is underway for Wesley David Elmore, 31, who is wanted by the Sebastian County Sheriff's Department for felony 1st degree battery.
Sheriff Duvall says Arkansas State Police pulled over a truck on Interstate 40 Westbound near mile mark 86 just east of the Russellville city limits. When the truck stopped he says Elmore jumped out ran away. The female driver took off in the 1992 burgundy Ford Ranger pickup regular cab and has not been found.
The sheriff says road blocks have been set up in the area and a State Police helicopter is searching for the suspect by air. Residents who live between Highway 64 and Cove Road in Pope County are being warned to be on the lookout for Elmore and to call police immediately if they see him.
Elmore is described as a white man, about 5'10 and weighs around 250 pounds. He has brown hair and brown eyes and was last seen wearing khaki pants, a dark heavy shirt or hoodie and a light colored baseball cap. He ran north from mile marker 86.
Police are also searching for the pickup truck.
