
Freshman BJ Young of the University of Arkansas men's basketball team was named the Southeastern Conference's Freshman of the Week it was announced by the league office on Monday.
Young, a 6-3 guard from St. Louis, Mo., averaged 20.5 points and 3.0 rebounds per game in Arkansas wins over Savannah State and No. 15/16 Mississippi State. Against Savannah State Young scored 17 points and hit 2-of-3 three-point baskets. His Mississippi State game saw the first-year player score 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting, grab three rebounds, dish two assists and make two steals. His 24-point output is the third highest in school history for a freshman in his SEC debut.
This season, Young is leading the Razorbacks in scoring at 14.8 points per game and is among the Southeastern Conference leaders in shooting percentage. He has three 20-plus point games including a career high 28 points against defending national champion Connecticut and has Arkansas' only double-double of the year when he scored 18 points and grabbed 11 rebounds against Utah Valley. Young is the leading scorer among freshmen in the Southeastern Conference and has 11 double-digit scoring efforts this season.
Young becomes the fourth Razorback to earn SEC Freshman of the Week honors, which began in 2007. Patrick Beverley was the first Arkansas player to take the honor, which he did three times, during the 2007 season. Since Beverley, Courtney Fortson was named Freshman of the week in 2009 and Marshawn Powell in 2010.
The Razorbacks are back in action on Wednesday night when they travel to Oxford, Miss., to take on the Mississippi Rebels, at 7 p.m. in a game televised by the SEC Network.
