Tyson Donates 32,000 Pounds of Chicken to Watershed

Posted: Updated:

(KATV, Source: Tyson Foods, Inc.) Little Rock – Wednesday, Tyson Foods, Inc. donated 32,000 pounds of chicken to Watershed Family Resource Center as part of an effort to feed people in need and promote public awareness of hunger in Arkansas.

Tyson has supported the community non-profit, led by Rev. Hezekiah Stewart, with a donation of protein every holiday season since 1984.

Watershed distributes food and household items to needy people in and around Little Rock.

Clearly there is a need. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's latest American Community Survey Profile, more than 18 percent of Arkansas' population is living in poverty and more than 27 percent of children under age 18 in Arkansas live in poverty.

"Christmas is the season for giving and being concerned about the well-being of others. Such is the case when God sent Christ into the world," said Rev. Stewart. "Tyson Foods, over the last 30 years, has been giving to the poor and needy. The people of Arkansas have been the benefactor of that generosity."

"Tyson Foods is dedicated to creating more awareness about hunger and food insecurity in America. Rev. Stewart's work in the community, and the state, creates that awareness while also getting food to the people who need it," said Ed Nicholson, director of community relations for Tyson Foods. "We're glad our company can provide much needed protein, especially during the holiday season."

Earlier this year, Tyson launched the "Know Hunger" campaign to raise hunger awareness. As part of the campaign, the company released the results of a survey which found that one in four Americans is worried about having enough money to put food on the table in the next year. Another key finding is that many Americans are unaware of how serious hunger is in their own communities.

Tyson Foods has fought hunger in the U.S. for a decade, donating more than 84 million pounds of protein, or the equivalent of 336 million meals. In addition to Feeding America, the company partners with the Food Research and Action Center, Share Our Strength, Lift Up America and the League of United Latin American Citizens to raise awareness and help feed the hungry across the nation.
