Plane That Crashed Is Seen In 1984 KTUL Story

The plane that crashed, killing Oklahoma State women's basketball coach Kurt Budke, assistant Miranda Serna and the pilots, Olin Branstetter and his wife Paula, was used in 1984 on a flight to the North Pole.

Channel 8 covered the story in 1984, following Branstetter and his wife as they took off from Bartlesville on their way to the North Pole. The Branstetters flew over the North Pole, dropping out an American flag and Oklahoma flag.

Paula became the first woman to fly over the magnetic North Pole in a single-engine aircraft during the flight.

In the video, you can see the Piper Cherokee plane used in that flight as well as the flight that tragically crashed in a heavily wooded area about 30 miles outside of Little Rock, Arkansas, killing the Branstetters and Oklahoma State women's basketball coach Kurt Budke and assistant Miranda Serna.

It's unclear what caused the plane to crash. Investigators from the National Transportation Safety Board have been dispatched to the crash site to begin the investigation.
