Alice Walton Arrested for DUI in Texas

Posted: Updated:

Walmart heiress Alice Walton got at least one unwanted present on her 62nd birthday last week: A trip to jail.

Authorities say Walton was arrested by a Texas Highway Patrol trooper just before 10:00 p.m. October 7th. Walton was stopped for a traffic violation on Interstate 20 inside a construction zone, and a field sobriety test showed Walton to be intoxicated, troopers say.

She later refused a breath test.

Walton faces one charge of driving while intoxicated, first offense, a class B misdemeanor. According to jail records, she was booked into jail shortly after 11 p.m. Oct 7th, and released on $1,000 bond around 8:40 a.m. the following morning.

Walton is the daughter of Sam Walton, the founder of Walmart Stores Inc., and Forbes currently names her the 10th richest person in America worth nearly $21 billion. Walton's book-in information lists a home address in Millsap, Texas.

This is not Walton's first DUI arrest. Walton was convicted of driving under the influence in a 1998 case in Benton County, and paid a several hundred dollar fine.

Texas authorities say Walton was charged with a first offense because the Arkansas conviction did not appear in her criminal history.

Media reports say Walton was also involved in a 1989 crash that resulted in the death of a 50-year-old woman. No charges were filed in that case.
