A former Oral Roberts baseball player has died in combat while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

The Department of Defense says 27-year-old Ryan Iannelli died Wednesday. He was a lieutenant in the U.S. Marine Corps and was assigned to Marine Light Attack Helicopter Squadron 269.

Iannelli was a member of the ORU baseball team and graduated from ORU in 2006. He was from Clarksboro, New Jersey.

In a message posted on the Oral Roberts University Facebook page, the school said "Please join us in prayer for his family, and for our troops. God bless."

"He was one of a kind," ORU head coach Rob Walton said in a release. "Ryan will be sorely missed. He was one of us, and he was a big part of my life. He was making a difference, and he believed in the difference he was making. Our Thoughts and prayers are with his family."
