Summertime means a lot more time in front of the TV for a lot of kids. But, according to a new study from Northwestern University, minority kids ages 8-18 spend about 13 hours a day in front of a screen. That total is about four and a half hours more than their peers. With all of those hours in front of a screen, what are kids not doing when they're watching TV or playing video games? Experts say they're not exercising, not reading, not studying and even more importantly, they're not talking to other people. Instead of using that time to become an adult, by learning how to talk to adults, and learning what they want to do with their lives, those hours are lost and they can never be regained. Kids don't have the maturity to monitor their own TV and computer time, so parents have to make sure they help them manage their time and interests.
