KATV Channel 7 - The Spirit of Arkansas: May 2011 Crime Victim Reparations Announced

LITTLE ROCK – Attorney General Dustin McDaniel announced today that the Arkansas Crime Victims Reparations Board awarded $339,092.84 in reparations to 217 crime victims during May.

 

McDaniel's office administers the Crime Victims Reparations Program, established in 1987 to help victims of crime pay for unexpected expenses. Reparations to victims are funded through court costs and fees, as well as fines imposed on convicted criminals.

 

In 2010, crime victims in Arkansas were awarded more than $3.3 million as reparations for such expenses as medical treatment, mental health counseling, replacement services and funeral costs.

 

Most awards are limited to $10,000 or less, though the maximum award can be as high as $25,000 for victims who receive catastrophic injuries resulting in total and permanent disability.

 

The Crime Victims Reparations Board decides which claims can be paid and how much can be awarded. Board members include Dr. Jan Church of Little Rock, Colleen Nick of Alma, Redious Yancy of North Little Rock, Louis Jones of Fayetteville, and Bryce Brewer of Little Rock.
