Neighbor leads UALR over Arkansas-Fort Smith 88-74
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Will Neighbour scored 20 points to lead Arkansas-Little Rock over Arkansas-Fort Smith 88-74 on Tuesday night.
Little Rock (3-4) opened on an 11-1 run and held its biggest lead of the night 81-56 on one of Neighbor's jumpers with 5:30 to go. James White had 11 points and 11 rebounds. Mareik Isom added 12 points and Josh Hagins had 11.
The extra chances which Little Rock created with 17 offensive rebounds were the difference in the game.
Fort Smith closed the deficit to 20-18 but allowed Little Rock to go on another 17-2 run and cruise to a 45-29 halftime advantage. The Lions never challenged Little Rock in the second half.
Kenny Martin led Fort Smith with 15 points. Jake Toupal had 11 points and Seth Youngblood had 10. Youngblood, Martin and Toupal each made three 3-pointers.
The schools had not met since the 1953-54 season.
Hot-shooting Arkansas downs SE Louisiana 111-65
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. (AP) - Bobby Portis and Michael Qualls scored 16 points each to lead four players in double figures as Arkansas made quick work of Southeastern Louisiana in a 111-65 win.
The Razorbacks (5-2), playing their first game after returning from the Maui Invitational, have now won 18 straight games at home - 38 in a row against unranked non-conference opponents.
Portis, Arkansas' freshman McDonald's All-American, finished with 7-of-9 shooting. Qualls was 5 of 6 from the floor, and all 12 players scored for the Razorbacks - who finished 38 of 61 (62.3 percent) from the field.
Arkansas topped the 100-point mark for the first time since a 112-63 win over Longwood on Nov. 18, 2012.
Jeffery Ricard led the Lions (3-4) with 14 points, while Dre Evans finished with 10.
Arkansas' smaller schools at football semifinals
LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - While Arkansas' larger high schools have reached the championship round in the state football playoffs, smaller schools are at the semifinal stage.
In Class 4A, top-ranked Dollarway will host third-ranked Booneville in one semifinal while Valley View travels to fourth-ranked Warren. The Lumberjacks last week defeated No. 2 Arkadelphia.
In Class 3A, one semifinal has No. 1 Charleston hosting Earle, which after a forfeit was seeded fifth in its eastern Arkansas conference. The other semifinal has Smackover at No. 3 Glen Rose.
In the Class 2A semifinals, Carlisle visits No. 1 Junction City and Des Arc hosts No. 5 Bearden. Carlisle and Des Arc are from the same central Arkansas conference, while Bearden and Junction City are from the same conference in southern Arkansas.
The games are scheduled for Friday.
Nowitzki's strong finish leads Mavs over Bobcats
DALLAS (AP) - Dirk Nowitzki recovered from a rough start to score 25 points, including 14 in the fourth quarter, and the Mavericks kept the Charlotte Bobcats winless in Dallas with an 89-82 victory Tuesday night.
Nowitzki, who was 1 of 10 from the field in the first half, and Monta Ellis took over late after struggling most of the game. They scored the last 19 points to help the Mavericks outscore Charlotte 29-15 in the fourth.
Al Jefferson scored 19 points, and Gerald Henderson and Kemba Walker had 16 apiece for the Bobcats, who are 0-10 in Dallas and 1-17 overall against the Mavericks. That's the worst record in the league for one team against another.
