Man Accused of Violating the Hate Crime Prevention Act

Posted: Updated:

An Arkansas man is the first in the country to be convicted under the new federal Hate Crimes Prevention Act.

19-year old Sean Popejoy pleaded guilty to one count of committing a federal hate crime along with one count of conspiring to commit a federal hate crime.

Popejoy admitted that he was part of a conspiracy last year to threaten and injure five Hispanic men in Green Forrest.

As part of his plea, Popejoy will testify in the trial of his co-conspirator Frankie Maybee.

Jury selection in that trial began Tuesday.
