The Bilingual Brain

Posted: Updated:

There's been a push in recent years to begin teaching a second language to elementary age students across the country.  Most parents agree this is a good idea, but now, there's even new research that proves there are several brain benefits that come from being able to speak a foreign language.  Researchers at Penn State University have found that speaking more than one language keeps the brain in shape and elevates mental functioning.  Bilingual children who use their second language regularly are better at prioritizing tasks and multitasking.  Foreign language advocates say there are other benefits as well.  Approximately, one-fifth of Americans speak more than just English at home.  Research suggests that being bilingual may go just beyond communication... it actually boosts brain power as well.  Being bilingual also makes a person more employable.  Unfortunately, many schools, facing budget cuts, are eliminating their foreign language programs.  If that happens to your child's school, experts say there are other options.  You can help your child form a foreign language club, you can look for classes online, or you can find a private foreign language class or teacher.
