Volunteering in the community is no longer something to just plump up a college application. In many public and private high schools, community service is now a requirement for graduation. Educators say the reasons behind the requirement are many. Volunteering for students is a way to get them to connect to their community. Many call it "service learning". Some students even find ways to give back right in their own school through tutoring and child care centers. Teachers say the service teaches interdependence. They say it shows students why their work in the word is important and needed. It also gives kids a feeling of self-worth. They feel good about giving back and many times they can see an immediate effect of their work. Teacher also say when kids work in the community they are exposed to different professions and work. In many instances, it is that exposure that gives students ideas for possible careers they might like to pursue in the future.
