Climbing the Social Ladder

Posted: Updated:

New Research now shows that teenagers who are trying to become popular may be the most aggressive and the most likely to bully other kids.  The study also claims that those trying to climb the social ladder are more likely to be cruel and critical.  A study from the University of California-Davis confirms that those trying to be popular exhibit more aggressive behaviors.  The study tracked 3000 kids throughout a year and found that aggression is a serious problem for insecure kids in the middle tier who are trying to win popularity battles.  But it also revealed that those most well-liked, feel secure in their social position and they are less likely to be cruel.  Popular kids are actually more kind than the kids wanting to be popular.  Doctors say parents need to emphasize to kids that empathy and compassion should come first when their kids are dealing with their friends.  Parents should also stress the importance of good friendships rather than popularity.
