Bullying and Depression in Girls

Bullying is a terrible thing for a child to face, but it can also lead to other problems for the victims.  A new study in the journal, Prevention Science links stubstance abuse as a result of bullying related depression in young girls.  There's also research from the University of Washington that supports the same concerns.  Data from a sample of 1,495 tenth graders shows a direct link between girls suffering from bullying related depression and substance abuse.  Doctors say that kids who suffer from chronic and serious bullying from a young age, on, are at risk for adult psychological difficulties and even suicide. 

Experts suggest schools put in place serious consequences for bullying that happens online and at school.  Parents need to make sure their kids talk to them about any bullying behavior.  it is crucial kids do not blame themselves for the bullying.  It is also important that they realize they aren't alone.  Bullying is at an all-time high in schools around the country.  Doctor's also suggest that parents seek professional help if they believe their teenage child is depressed.
