Storyteller to Visit ASU Museum

Posted: Updated:

In honor of Black History Month, the Arkansas State University Museum presents renowned African American storyteller Dr. Gwendolyn Twillie on Saturday, Feb. 12, at 10:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Dr. Twillie will present "A Storytelling Journey:  America-the Caribbean-Africa," using oral tradition to take visitors on a journey through history. This event is free, thanks to ASU's Office of Diversity, and everyone is welcome. The ASU Museum is located at 320 University Loop Circle, Jonesboro, in the Dean B. Ellis Library building.

Storytelling was once used to teach children morality lessons, including lessons on the value of hard work, honesty, and integrity. The tales were passed from generation to generation, and they will delight today's young children and enhance adults' understanding of the methods of non-written communication that predominated for millennia.

Prior to her retirement, Dr. Twillie was employed in the public schools of Arkansas and at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR). During her twenty-four-year tenure at UALR (ten of which she served as chair of the Theatre and Dance Department), Modern Dance, Movement Education, and Pantomime were among the courses she taught. She has told stories and presented workshops on movement activities for children, including workshops on creative rhythmic movement, modern dance, mime, and storytelling in school districts across the state.

"A Storytelling Journey: America-the Caribbean-Africa," is a family event with something of interest for all age levels, and an educational opportunity that includes history, culture, and the arts. The ASU Museum supports lifelong learning and encourages families to play together and learn together. For information on fun-but-educational birthday parties, visit the ASU Museum online (http://www2.astate.edu/a/museum/index.dot.), or call Dr. Lenore Shoults (lshoults@astate.edu) at (870) 972-2074. Regular museum hours are Tuesday, 9 a.m.-7 p.m., Wednesday-Saturday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday 1-5 p.m. The museum is closed on Mondays and university holidays.

Advertising for "A Storytelling Journey: America-the Caribbean-Africa," was paid for with a combination of state funds and Arkansas Delta Byways regional association funds.
