Most Overused Job-Hunting Buzzwords

Posted: Updated:

You may be among the unemployed looking for work.  Or maybe you want to change jobs. If so, what you say in your interview and on your resume is so important. But don't overdo it.

Next time you're interviewing for a new job try not to say, "I'm a dynamic and motivated team-player with a proven track record as a problem solver who loves a fast-paced, results-oriented work environment."

LinkedIn says those are some of words and phrases that are the kiss of death to your job prospects.  The business-minded social networking site is out with its 10 most overused buzzwords on the site's more than 85 million profiles.  Here they are:

  • Extensive experience
  • Innovative
  • Motivated
  • Results-oriented
  • Dynamic
  • Proven track record
  • Team player
  • Fast-paced
  • Problem solver
  • Entrepreneurial

LinkedIn says give your profile a makeover now by making it more actionable, from start to finish, and lose those cliched terms.

Tulsa resume expert Vicki Hidde calls many of these empty words.  She was surprised that "I'm a people person" isn't on the list.  Hidde says "select your phrases and words carefully and apply them to the job industry you're applying to."
