UPDATE: Clark County Escapee Captured

Posted: Updated:

Clark County authorities say Lamar Demond Holmes is back in custody at the Clark County Jail.

Holmes, 34, escaped from jail grounds around 8:00 p.m. Friday night.  He was captured at Arkadelphia's Walmart Supercenter around 10:50 p.m. the same night.

Sgt. Jim Pennington of the Clark County Sheriff's Department said the escape was the result of lack of manpower in the jail.

According to Pennington, Holmes was out of his cell in the block's day room in accordance with state mandate. Holmes requested over the counter medication, which the jailer administered. Then another inmate, still locked in his cell, called for the jailer's assistance. When the jailer walked to assist the other inmate, Holmes exited the dayroom into a hallway area, shutting the block door behind him. Pennington said Holmes then jammed the switchboard to unlock the exit doors so he could leave the building.

An on-duty officer pulling into the Sheriff's Department saw Holmes leaving the jail, stripping out of his inmate uniform. The dispatcher returned to the switchboard to notify officers via radio. The officer pursued Holmes, but lost him in a residential area southeast of the courthouse.

The Arkadelphia Police Department, Arkansas State Police, and the fugitive search dog team from the Arkansas Department of Corrections assisted the Clark County Sheriff's Department in the search.

In what seemed to be an unrelated call, a customer called the Arkadelphia Police Department to report a suspicious man who was barefoot and wearing shorts following people around the store. Pennington said Arkadelphia police arrived at the store and spotted Holmes. Holmes again tried to flee, but was captured by Arkadelphia police officers at about 10:50 p.m., he said.

He was recently sentenced to 30 years in prison for robbing the West Pine Street branch of U.S. Bank earlier this fall. He will now face first degree escape charges and might also be charged with assault for his treatment of the dispatcher.
