Little Rock - Arkansas legal experts say it's unlikely the state would end the practice of electing judges, despite efforts by former U.S. Supreme Court justice Sandra Day O'Connor.

O'Connor and some sitting state Supreme Court justices are promoting the O'Connor Judicial Selection Initiative.

The judges will encourage legislatures in states including Arkansas that now elect judges to end the practice and create commissions to handle judicial appointments.

Arkansas Bar Association President Donna Pettus of Fayetteville says she doesn't think Arkansas will make the change because they like electing their judges.

State Rep. Steve Harrelson, D-Texarkana, the chairman of the Arkansas House Judiciary Committee, says he does not see significant support for changing the state's current system.

In 2000, Arkansas voters chose to make judicial elections nonpartisan.
