Fort Smith - An overcrowded state prison system is being blamed for a backup of inmates in the Sebastian County jail.
Sebastian County officials partly blame the overcrowding for at least six escapes or mistaken releases of inmates since July.
The sheriff, local judges, prosecutors and police have created a committee to try and reduce the jail population through "diversion" sentences and other programs.
They say the jail is crowded with as many as 150 prison-bound inmates awaiting transfer.
Sebastian County jail administrator Mike Conger says similar problems are being experienced across the state because state prisons are full and there is no money in the budget to build more facilities.
