Little Rock - A series of divots dug out along the centerline of winding Arkansas 7 north of Russelville are being credited for a dramatic decline in fatalities along the stretch of highway.
Known as "rumble strips," the divots were installed in 2004, and since then fatalities along the winding road through the Ozark National Forest have dropped sharply.
From 2001 to 2004, there were 11 fatal crashes on the narrow, twisting 74-mile stretch between Dover and Harrison.
In the three years after the installation, there were four fatality crashes reported. The number of injury accidents also declined - by 26 percent.
The Arkansas Highway and Transportation Department last month was among five state transportation agencies to receive a national safety honor for the strips.
