Mountain Home - Federal officials say steady water releases into the nationally recognized White River trout fishery below Norfork Dam should start flowing in 2012.
Minimum-flow water releases also are planned at Bull Shoals Dam sometime after the Norfolk releases begin. Plans for both water releases have been decades in the making.
The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission are teaming up to produce the minimum flows, which are small water releases through the dams and into the river when no floodwaters are discharging and no electricity is generating.
Studies have shown the steady releases should improve trout habitat in the tail waters of the two dams and boost the region's fishing industry.
