Little Rock - Newly released figures show the unemployment rate in Arkansas rose half a percentage point in October to 7.6 percent.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, this is the highest jobless rate in the state since September 1988, when it also was 7.6 percent.

Arkansas has lost 28,700 jobs in the past year, a 2.4 percent decline compared with October 2008. The state added 2,400 jobs in October when compared with September.

According to the state Department of Workforce Services, the trade, transportation and utilities sector lost 1,600 jobs, while the leisure and hospitality sector lost 700 jobs.

The government sector added 2,800 jobs, mostly because public schools reached their anticipated employment level for the year.

As the unemployment rates soar upward to an official rate of 10.2% (actual rates being close to 18% if the unemployed no longer elgible for benefits or who have just given up looking or are underemployed are counted) the Congress and the Obama administration are fiddling away while "Rome" burns to the ground. They have chosen to give massive relief for wealthy banks and large corporations and have raised the Federal deficits to unpayable levels while neglecting the average families and individual citizens of this country. The banks receiving the massive bailouts are hoarding the cash rather than pumping the monies into the economy. If the goverment had just given the bailout monies to regular families who would spend it the economy would have perked up right away and we would not be having this discusssion. The Federal Reserve banking system was allowed to hike up interest rates and tighten credit until they caused the recession and the now the goverment acts like they don't have a clue why the economy is so rotten. The reason that they are busy with their health care agenda instead of saving the economy is that they just don't care about anything except for gaining more power and control over our lives and looking for more ways to extort higher taxes from us while telling us how much better everything is going to be in the future if we only let them have more power, control and our money. This scam has got to stop and we need to clean house in the next election by throwing out members of both political parties who arrogantly ignore the citizens they are supposed to represent. The "let the peasants eat cake" attitude doesn't cut it anymore. It is the economy stupid!
