Little Rock - A telephone program that helped link callers to social service programs in the state is being shut down because of a lack of funding.

The Arkansas 211 phone program will be suspended this week. United Way of Arkansas State Association chairman John Nazzaro says he doesn't know if the closing of the program will be permanent - but he anticipates it will be.

The service allowed residents to dial 211 to get help with social service referrals.

Officials say more than 42,000 people called Arkansas 211 from Jan. 1 through Aug. 24 this year to get help, primarily for utility bills, food and rental assistance.

I'd say the previous posts are pretty pointed. I guess those who have been laid off the past several years and have problems finding employment in our slow economy deserve to starve. Their kids too. How dare they be so sorry as to be down on their luck and experience hard times. I realize there is an element in our society that does not work. but there is also a large number of Arkansans who are hurting right now, no fault of their own. The sad part is that outside LR, not many knew of the 211 system.
