Thousands of children in Arkansas' foster system need parents, and Monday night a group called "The Call" held a meeting, trying to recruit more Arkansas to foster and adopt.
The Call did not take a position on Act I, which bans live-in couples from fostering, and there really wasn't much talk of the initiative Monday night. People said they just wanted to see if fostering is a fit for them.
Dozens of Arkansans gather at a North Little Rock Church Monday night to learn more about fostering and adopting children through a group named "The Call," or Children of Arkansas Loved for a Lifetime.
(Mary Carol Pederson, The Call) "The CALL's mission is to educate, equip and encourage the Christian community to provide a future and hope to children in foster care."
On any given day, there are 3000 to 4000 Arkansas kids in foster care, and only 1000 foster parents.
Alicen Bennett manages foster parent recruitment for the state and says publicity surrounding initiated Act I has brought the issue to the forefront.
(Alicen Bennett, Dept. of Children and Family Services) "I think Arkansans have spoken and said how they feel and now are putting some action behind those words."
Jennifer can't have kids of her own and says her husband was a foster child, so she wanted to help.
(Jennifer) "There's so many kids that just need someone to love them...that's all they want, and they're here."
The Reas have fostered for two years, and say they feel they're making a difference.
(Nancy Rea, Foster Parent) "We're just the putty in the cracks from their broken lives to when they can find a family or go back to their family and their family can be whole. We just fill in the cracks."

If you are a married couple, and you voted for Act 1, you are a hypocrite if you don't sign up to be foster parents! I don't care if you have 5 children of your own, you have an obligation now to help take care of the thousands of children who need a temporary place to live.
