The Humane Society of the United States says a Huntsville School District teacher's killing of a raccoon with a nail gun should be considered animal cruelty. A letter to the district by Desiree Bender, the state director of the humane society, suggested teacher Jerick Hutchinson's killing of the raccoon last week could be prosecuted, as cruelty to animals is a misdemeanor in the state.
Bender also questioned superintendent Alvin Lievsay's decision not to take any disciplinary action against Hutchinson.
Lievsay says a student's parent promised to bring in a raccoon for the exercise, but surprised Hutchinson last week by bringing the animal in a live trap. Hutchinson later took the animal outside to the back of his truck and shot it with the nail gun.
Lievsay says no students witnessed the raccoon's death and only one opted out of a planned skinning exercise.
