As America observes this Veterans Day holiday, Arkansans are paying tribute to our men and women in uniform. The big Veterans Day ceremony was held Sunday at the Arkansas State Capitol. Monday was more about communities coming together to salute their heroes.
Dozens of White County residents gathered in McRae Monday morning to honor our men and women in uniform.
(Cpl. Eual Kirk, Veteran) “Veterans Day is something we all should recognize and celebrate. You know, it's just the people coming together, and if it wasn't for the veterans, we wouldn't have the country that we do have.”It's a holiday honoring our living veterans, but for the community of McRae, it's impossible to honor the living without also remembering the dead.
The McRae Veterans Memorial has a cross for every Arkansan killed in the global War on Terror. But the names of soldiers killed from this community are cut in stone.
(Mayor Bob Sullivan, Veteran) “People come together from all over our community and work on this. And money's been donated, labor's been donated. Anytime that we have a military person that passes away, you can just bet the funeral home's going to be full of people from McRae.”As of now, 57 Arkansans have been killed since the start of the war in Iraq.
