Officials Stress Safety During Deer Season

Over half a million hunters will hit the woods Saturday morning for the opening day of Modern Gun Deer Season.
Last year, the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission recorded 15 hunting accidents throughout the entire hunting season. Luckily, out of those 15 accidents, there were no fatalities and the Arkansas Game Fish Commission hopes to keep it that way.
On Saturday morning, hundreds of thousands of deer hunters will make their way to the deer woods for opening day and the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission wants to make sure everyone of those hunters stays safe.
(Joe Huggins, Arkansas Game and Fish Commission) "If you don't watch what you do, an accident could occur and someone could get hurt and that's what we want to try to prevent."
To do that, the Game and Fish Commission requires every hunter born after 1968 to take a hunter's education course, either online or with an instructor.
The class reinforces safety measures the Game and Fish Commission says everyone should keep in mind, such as always point the muzzle of the gun away from your body, fully identify your target before shooting and unload the fire arm when traveling on a rough road. Another lesson, alcohol and firearms do not go together.
(Huggins) "Don't mix the two together. If you're gonna do one, don't do the other."
One more thing to remember, if you are hunting, it is the law for you to wear 400 square inches of hunters orange on your upper body along with orange headwear.
