A competitor of Bentonville-based Wal-Mart in Britain that is preparing to launch stores in the U.S. has hired a Little Rock firm to provide data for possible store locations.
Tesco PLC is already competing with Wal-Mart Stores Inc.'s Asda stores in Britain, and Tesco is opening 120 small grocery stores in Arizona, California and Nevada. The company plans to have 200 of the stores in Western states by February 2009.
Tesco has signed Little Rock-based The Gadberry Group to a multi-year-deal to provide data to help the retailer find the most suitable locations for its Fresh & Easy stores.
The stores are to feature healthy foods and prepared meals, among other items, at discount prices. Tesco is also seen as a competitor of 7-Eleven and Whole Foods Market.
