Texarkana - Voters in Little River County will be asked to approve a sales tax to build and operate a new county jail.
Officials say if the sales tax isn't approved the county will be forced to close the current jail.
The county's Quorum Court has set a special election for Oct. 13 to consider a 3/8 cent sales tax for an estimated $6.7 million jail. County Judge Clayton Castleman says the tax to build the jail will eventually expire, while a 1/8 cent tax to operate the jail will continue.
The vote comes after a June 2nd report from the Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration Criminal Detention Facilities Review Committee.
The committee said the current jail is "very inadequate" and "is a lawsuit waiting to happen."
