Little Rock - A Mount Ida man who has worked for 55 years as a volunteer weather observer for the National Weather Service
(web | news) is one of six recipients in the nation of the agency's Thomas Jefferson Award.
William E. Black will be presented with the award Sept. 17 during a ceremony at the state Capitol. He also will receive the agency's Benjamin Franklin Award for his 55 years of service.
Black also has a history of public service in Montgomery County, where he has served as sheriff, county clerk and county judge.
The National Weather Service Cooperative Weather Observer Program involves more than 11,000 volunteer observers who provide daily reports on temperature, precipitation and other weather factors.
