Education Board Spares Bald Knob District, For Now
posted 4:31 pm Mon September 24, 2007 - Bald Knob
The State Board of Education voted unanimously to allow the Bald Knob School District to remain independent – at least for now. The state took control of the fiscally distressed district last month, firing the superintendent and the school board. In the weeks since, the community has worked to raise the $2 million necessary to save their schools.
The community has been able to raise $1.5 million in just over a month’s time, a feat state education commissioner described this morning as phenomenal. Still, the Bald Knob bulldogs are not out of the dog house just yet.
Tears streamed down Cordell Crisp’s face as Ken James and the state board of education held the fate of this 7th grader’s school in their hands.
(Cordell Crisp, Bald Knob 7th grader) "Just please give us this amount of time needed to raise the amount of money we need."
It has been an emotional month for the Bald Knob Community. The week before school started, the state took over the district because of a projected $2 million deficit. It was a move that sent the Bald Knob Bulldogs into fighting mode, feverishly fundraising to make the state’s September deadline.
As of Monday, the district has raised $1.5 million, adjusted their operating budget, and will soon vote on a sales tax to help ease the cash flow.
