Mexicans in N.W. Arkansas Meet as Immigration Crackdown Looms
   posted 9:38 pm Sat September 08, 2007 - Springdale
About 250 people turned out to receive matricula consular cards during the first visit to the region by the Mexican consulate in Little Rock.
The visit comes only a few months after the consulate officially opened, and as police agencies in northwest Arkansas prepare to locally enforce federal immigration laws.

Consul Andres Chao met with Rogers Mayor Steve Womack, the biggest proponent of the increased enforcement, saying that he disagrees with the mayor. Rogers, Springdale and the Benton and

Washington counties' sheriff's offices plan on using the new training to report arrestees for deportation.

Only Rogers plans to use the new training during traffic stops; the other agencies will screen those already in custody.
