Little Rock - Two environmental groups have filed a new request to state regulators asking them to stop construction of a coal-fired power plant in southwest Arkansas.

The Sierra Club and National Audubon Society filed the request Wednesday to the Arkansas Pollution Control and Ecology Commission.

In it, the groups claim a decision by federal regulators over a Kentucky power plant shows the planned $1.6 billion coal-fired plant in Hempstead County would violate the federal Clean Air Act.

It is unclear when the commission will address the request.

Southwestern Electric Power Co., a subsidiary of Columbus, Ohio-based American Electric Power, wants to build the power plant.

Clean coal is about the equivalent of a filtered cigarette Bubba.  The only way to make clean coal work is to sequester the CO2 emissions or recycle that CO2 for biodiesel production.  Coal is not a renewable resource.  We should be investing in Wind/Solar to suppliment our electricity needs.  This power generation is not needed for Arkansas.  It's for Texas and Louisiana.  How would you feel if your neighbor built a house and put his septic tank in your front yard?  It's the same concept.  They get the benefits, we get the pollution.

Coal may not be renewable but it is cheap and affordable.  I don't understand the sudden rush to renewable energy sources and dropping the natural resources we have avaiable.  I think we have to be good stewards of what we have avaiable and in the process open up the door and to renewable sources at the same time.  Wind Energy may be good but it is expensive to transmite it.  The same thing with solar energy.  Don't get me wrong I have not problem with Wind and Solar energy but we can't cut coal cold turkey.
