It is still anyone's guess as to where Hurricane Gustav will come ashore.
While the most likely target is Louisiana--which has already declared a state of emergency--it could hit anywhere from the Texas coast to the Florida panhandle.
And many Arkansans are once again ready to help.
It was three years ago to the day that Yolanda Tomkies arrived in the Natural State with the Chahta Tribe--one day before Hurricane Katrina destroyed her home and everything she had in Slidell, Louisiana.
Now an employee at the Watershed--which helped her after she evacuated--Yoland is spending the day on the phone rounding up supplies to help her fellow Louisianans.
They are expected to arrive in Little Rock this weekend.
(Rev. Hezekiah Stewart, Watershed) “Anywhere from 100 to 400 people could be coming into Arkansas here at the Watershed and the church so that they might be able to weather the storm.”
Yolanda says members of the Chahta Tribe are leaving the Gulf Coast as a precautionary measure.
(Yolanda Tomkies, Former Louisiana Resident) “Everything was destroyed, so to have people still down there with half-built homes--that's not very safe.”
Meanwhile, the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management has been put on standby, ready to house up to 4,000 evacuees at Fort Chaffee if necessary.
(Tommy Jackson, AR Dept. Emergency Management) “We feel for our neighbors to the south of us, and hopefully they can be spared this time. If not, the state of Arkansas is ready to help them in any way we can--as much as we can.”
A lot of hotels in southern Arkansas are already sold out. There are still rooms available in central Arkansas, and some are offering discounted rates to evacuees.
Little Rock hotels offering special rates to hurricane evacuees include:
Comfort Inn
Courtyard Marriott
Crowne Plaza
Ramada Inn
Residence Inn
Also, the Watershed in Little Rock is collecting supplies in anticipation of the arrival of people escaping Hurricane Gustav. They need money, clothing in good condition, and personal hygiene products--along with food and volunteers.
