The University of Arkansas at Little Rock is banning smoking on its campus, beginning next August.
Chancellor Joel Anderson made the announcement Wednesday in a memorandum to faculty, students and staff.
"Plainly, the new smoke-free policy for the university will not ensure that everyone at UALR makes healthy choices," Anderson said in the memo. "It is, however, a step in the right direction. At minimum the policy will strengthen prevention efforts and reduce the number of new smokers."
In Arkansas, campus-wide bans are in place at University of Arkansas campuses in Fayetteville, Pine Bluff and Fort Smith, along with the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences. Bans are in place at North Arkansas College in Harrison and Southern Arkansas University Tech in Camden.
