Arkadelphia - A proposal to merge Caddo Valley into the city of Arkadelphia has failed with 72% of the vote in Caddo Valley opposing the idea.
Caddo Valley voters rejected the proposal in Tuesday's special election by a vote of 166-64 against the plan. Voters in Arkadelphia approved the proposal by a 638-189 margin.
Voters in both cities had to approve the merger for it to take place.
Caddo Valley Mayor Alan Dillavou argued against the consolidation, saying Caddo Valley residents wouldn't be allowed "to pick up a hammer without a permit."
Arkadelphia City Manager Jimmy Bolt had said the merger would allow the two communities to share resources, combine services and work as one entity in soliciting new industries.
