Little Rock - The parent company of Little Rock television station KATV has donated videotape spanning five decades to the University of Arkansas.
Among the images captured on the videotape are Elvis Presley receiving a haircut at Fort Chaffee after joining the Army in 1958, the swearing-in ceremonies for every governor from Sid McMath in 1949 to Mike Beebe in 2007, and Johnny Cash singing at Cummins Prison in 1969.
The more than 26,000 hours of news stories will be sent to the David and Barbara Pryor Center for Arkansas Oral and Visual history. The center opened in 1999 in Fayetteville and is part of the university library's special collections.
The videotape likely will take years to digitize, but plans call for it to eventually be available online.
