Newly released documents show that University of Central Arkansas President Lu Hardin told school trustees they could set aside $150,000 a year for in him "deferred income" above his salary without disclosing it publicly.

Hardin is a former state lawmaker who worked on the state's Freedom of Information Act. He says he believed that income was not subject to state open records laws. The request for the additional income and a $300,000 bonus came after trustees asked him to come up with a compensation package to make the school competitive with other universities.

Hardin later repaid the $300,000 bonus, less taxes, after media reports questioned whether the board violated state law by not disclosing the bonus package in meeting minutes and notes. Hardin says the board will take a public vote on accelerating the $300,000 payment during the open portion of a trustee's meeting scheduled for Friday.

Concerned Dude
Yes, Southern1 and Willdf.  It is a sad thing and yes he is an ex politician(the "party" doesn't make any difference).  If you don't grasp what I'm referring to, JUST WAIT until WE THE PEOPLE, the tax payer, get the bill for "bailing out" the crooks which have been loaning all this money out to home buyers.  IN STEAD, WE THE PEOPLE should be "DEMANDING" that those who "did" the dirty deals(to enrich themselves or to make the administration's economic situation look good) and "looked" the other way when they should have been "protecting" US, the tax payers.  When did any of us EVER have anyone else to "cover" our failures to pay.  OH, thats right, our Congress added 4BILLION onto the bill in hopes that it may take the pressure off them.  The sad thing is, they all will get away with what they are doing.  I believe, if I'm not mistaken, that WE THE PEOPLE are STILL paying on a "bail out" of the Savings & Loan organizations which went belly up during the "elder" Bush's administration.  Guess WE THE PEOPLE will be thanking that family for decades to come for their(stated great "GIFT"  of leadership as President) in PROTECTING us from those that MAY do us harm.  I know we(and our off spring) will be paying for that protection for "decades" to come.
