Opening the lines of communication--that's what the North Little Rock Police Department is hoping to do with the local Hispanic community.
As that population continues to grow, police officers hope a series of informational meetings will offer understanding and comfort to all who live in North Little Rock.
(Chief Danny Bradley, North Little Rock Police Department) “We felt like it was important that we try to bring the Hispanic community in so they can get to know us, and we can get to know some of their needs, and we can establish a better relationship, so that we can ensure their safety in the community.”
Police Chief Danny Bradley says it's important to establish a relationship with the growing Hispanic community in North Little Rock. Hispanic leaders agree.
(Maria Touchstone, Hispanic Leader) “We know that if these lines of communication can be established, that the community is going to feel safe and secure, and many of the issues concerning security can be addressed.”
Chief Bradley says language and cultural differences are often barriers, but their main concern is a distrust of police.
(Bradley) “Some of that comes because they're in a new place. Part of it comes from the history and experiences in their country, which may not have been good, and they bring that same distrust here to the police.”
The hope is these meetings will let everyone know that the police are here to serve everyone.
(Touchstone) “These steps that are being taken by different organizations and city services like the police department are crucial, because the Hispanic community is going to continue to grow, and we just celebrate every step that is being taken to address the needs of that population.”
