A group of good Samaritans rescued four people from a burning car, minutes after a fatal head-on collision in Jacksonville.
The accident left one man dead and four people injured, and backed up traffic for hours.
The crash happened on an access road along Highway 67/167 in Jacksonville around 3:30 p.m. Thursday. Minutes after the fatal head-on collision, several witnesses realized four people--including two children--were trapped inside one of the cars. Without hesitation, those witnesses decided to help.
(Curtis Green, Witness) "I'd seen some people that were in a bad way, and they were hurting, and I wanted to do whatever I could do to help."
So Curtis Green, along with several others, began to pull the two children and two adults out of the car, which then burst into flames.
(Dale Smolik, Witness) "A lady was trapped inside, and we tried to get the door open to get her out. But we couldn't, so we had to drag her out of the window."
Authorities say a white Trans Am collided with a Ford Ranger, killing the driver of the truck, 57-year-old Steven Charles Jenkins of Cabot. The Pulaski County Sheriff's Office says the two adults will undergo surgery for their injuries. One of the children was treated for a minor head injury, while the other remains at a local hospital with a more serious head injury.
It will take two to three weeks to determine who was at fault.
