High gas prices have put the brakes on cruising for some central Arkansas teens this summer.
Colleen Hedges paid her uncle one dollar for her 1988 Toyota Land Cruiser. It costs 90-times the sales price just to fill up the SUV's gas tank.
(Colleen Hedges, Teen Driver) “About $88 to $90 to fill up my car completely."
When Colleen first got the Land Cruiser, her parents agreed to buy one tank of gas a week. The rest would on Colleen's dime.
(John Hedges, Colleen's Dad) "She has to work pretty much full-time every day just to keep gas in the car. She's very aware of how much gas she has, how many hills there are, and whether or not she can coast."
(Colleen Hedges) "I had coasting down to an art. I'm the master--after a certain point, I don't have to press the gas pedal any more."
But Colleen's coasting came to an abrupt stop in west Little Rock a couple of weeks ago.
(Colleen Hedges) “I was coming down Bowman, and I knew I could coast into this gas station, since it was right at the bottom. I got to the bottom and the light turned red."
But when the light turned green, Colleen found she couldn't go anywhere.
(Colleen Hedges) “I thought, ‘Oh, maybe I'll have just a little left, I can do it.’ But I didn't have anything. I was completely out of gas."
But not out of hope.
(Colleen Hedges) "People were jumping out of their cars to help push. My French teacher jumped out and started pushing."
Since Colleen's car only gets ten miles to the gallon, every little bit helps. She also says her days of coasting are in the rear view mirror.
(Colleen Hedges) "I'm done with that."
The Hedges family has adjusted their agreement for how to pay for gas. Now, Colleen splits the bill with her parents.
