Authorities say police and FBI (web) agents have captured an ex-convict suspected of killing eight people in two states--including a couple from Sherwood.
Nicholas T. Sheley is being held in Illinois. Reportedly, he told a judge that he could not post the $1 million bail for five charges stemming from one of the killings. He is expected to face additional felony charges in both Illinois and Missouri.
Sheley is believed to have killed Tom Estes and his wife Jill in the parking lot of the Comfort Inn in Festus, Missouri on Sunday.
Officials say Sheley was arrested Tuesday evening as he smoked a cigarette outside of a bar in Granite City, Illinois, in the southwestern part of that state.
(Gary Range, Witness) ”White male walked into the bar, sat at the other end of the bar and I called the barmaid over—Jenny--and I said, ‘He looks a whole lot like the picture they just showed on the news.’ And she said, ‘Yes--yes he does."
Sheley reportedly used an ax in at least some of the murders. FBI officials will only say the Estes’ died from blunt force trauma.
(Chief Tim Lewis, Festus Police) "Our hearts and prayers go out to the families in Illinois, and to the family in Arkansas who lost loved ones to this crazed individual."
In Sherwood, a memorial of angles and flowers now sits in the front lawn of the Estes' home. Friends and fellow coworkers set up the display Wednesday afternoon.
(Debbie Papp, Friend) "We went and got some stuff and put it in their yard, just so that they know were loved--and the kids will know people miss their mom and dad."
The couple was in St. Louis for a niece’s graduation. Tom Estes worked for Union Pacific Railroad.
