Little Rock - Ten-year-old Emily Franks is proof that you don't have to be an adult to make a difference--just a desire to help and little patience.
Emily has both.
Emily starts 6th grade in the fall. She was in the 3rd grade the last time she had a haircut. But now, two-and-a-half year’s worth of hair is coming off.
She got the idea from her piano teacher, who grew her hair out to donate it to Pantene's Beautiful Lengths, an organization that makes wigs for cancer patients who've lost their hair during treatment.
Emily has followed suit.
(Emily Franks, 10-Years-Old) “Those women and kids and men who have cancer who don't have hair--that's just really sad. That can lower their confidence. We have to get our hair cut anyway, so I thought, ‘Why not get it cut off a little more, and give it to a good cause--and make someone feel better about themselves?”
Make no mistake--this was not hard to do. With a few clips of the scissors, stylist Gretchen Bickerstaff took off an 8-inch ponytail--the required length for donation.
It takes at least six donations to make one wig--meaning it takes a lot more people like Emily to help the cancer patients.
Emily hopes she can help motivate other kids to help.
(Franks) “It's really a great feeling to know that someone at such a young age--at 10 or 11, or even younger than me--can make such a big difference in the world.”
Emily says she'd love to grow her hair out and donate it again.
