Little Rock -
Greener buses could be rolling into Arkansas. Thanks to the federal stimulus plan the Central Arkansas Transit is getting more than $5 million. Now CAT officials are considering using the money on more environmentally friendly rigs.
At the suggestion of North Little Rock Mayor Patrick Hayes, CAT is considering buying vehicles powered by compressed Natural Gas or CNG. But the greener fuel could cost the company more money. CNG buses are about $50,000 more expensive than diesel rigs and CAT would have to roll out more money to pay for a fueling station and other infrastructure costs .
The CAT board will likely vote on the issue at their meeting in July. But even if the measure is approved, it could take at least 18 months before CNG busses will hit the road in Central Arkansas.
