Paragould - A Greene County sheriff's deputy has resigned after being accused of stealing a gun and a knife from an accident scene.
Sheriff Dan Langston says 27-year-old Sidney Robert Binkley resigned last week after an internal investigation. Binkley was charged Monday with one felony theft count and one misdemeanor theft count.
Authorities say Binkley told investigators that he took the Glock 9mm pistol worth $600 and a benchmade knife worth $250 from the scene of an accident in which the owner was allegedly a convicted felon. Officials say Binkley believed the gun owner would not complain because of his record.
The weapons were found in Binkley's home by a state police investigator, who said Binkley admitted taking the items but claimed he was planning to return the firearm.
Binkley was released Monday after he posted $10,000 bond.
