Little Rock - State regulators are expected to rule soon on whether three groups trying to oppose a $53.9 million rate hike that will help fund a southwest Arkansas power plant can intervene in the case.
The Arkansas Public Service Commission on Wednesday heard arguments in a motion by Sierra Club, Audubon Arkansas and the newly formed Customers Advancing Responsible Rates requesting to intervene in Southwestern Electric Power Co.'s proposed rate case.
Dave Slaton, the commission's chief administrative law judge, said the commission did not rule Wednesday and that he expected a decision within the week.
The three groups say they oppose the increase because it would help fund the $1.6 billion John W. Turk Jr. Power plant under construction in Hempstead County. Hearings opened Monday in an appeal filed by the plant's opponents objecting to the Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality's decision to issue an air permit for the facility.
